The district of Santa María de Chicmo is located in the province of Andahuaylas in the Apurímac region in south-central Peru . The district was established on December 11, 1964. It has an area of 156 km². The 2017 census counted 8,770 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 9928, in 2007 9430. The district administration is located in the 3262 m high town of Santa María de Chicmo with 627 inhabitants (as of 2017). Santa María de Chicmo is located about 11 km west of the provincial capital Andahuaylas . The national road 3S from Andahuaylas to Chincheros runs through the district.
Geographical location
The district of Santa María de Chicmo is located in the Andean highlands in the far east of the Andahuaylas province. The longitudinal extension from SW-NE direction is 18 km and a maximum width of 15 km. The south-west is drained to the west via the Río Huancaray, the northeast is drained via the Río Chumbao to the north.
The district of Santa María de Chicmo borders in the west on the district Uranmarca , in the north on the districts Ranracancha and Ocobamba (all three of the above-mentioned districts are in the province Chincheros ), in the east on the district Talavera , in the south on the district Huancaray and in the outermost Southwest to the San Antonio de Cachi .
