The Vilcas Huamán district is located in the Vilcas Huamán province in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was founded on February 1, 1944. It has an area of ​​220 km². The 2017 census counted 6835 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 7,323, in 2007 it was 8,300. The seat of the provincial and district administration is the 3470  m high town of Vilcas Huamán (also Vilcashuamán) with 2,672 inhabitants (as of 2017). Vilcas Huamán is located 62 km south-southeast of the regional capital Ayacucho .

Geographical location

The district of Vilcas Huamán is located in the Andean highlands in the middle of the province of Vilcas Huamán. The Río Vischongo flows south along the western district boundary and flows into the Río Pampas, which flows southeast . In the east, the district is also bounded by the Río Pampas. There it flows in a northerly direction.

The district of Vilcas Huamán borders in the south on the districts Saurama and Huambalpa , in the west on the district Colca ( province Víctor Fajardo ), in the northwest on the district Vischongo , in the north on the district Concepción and in the east on the district Cocharcas ( province Chincheros ) .
