The district of Vischongo is located in the province of Vilcas Huamán in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district has an area of ​​279 km². The 2017 census counted 4004 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 3513, in 2007 it was 4418. The seat of the district administration is the 3126  m high village of Vischongo with 812 inhabitants (as of 2017). Vischongo is located 8.5 km north-northwest of the provincial capital Vilcas Huamán . West of Vischongo is the archaeological site Intihuatana de Pomacochas.

Geographical location

The district of Vischongo is located in the Andean highlands in the northwest of the province of Vilcas Huamán. The Río Vischongo crosses the district in a southerly direction, then forms the southeastern border of the district and finally flows into the east flowing Río Pampas in the south of the district .

The district of Vischongo borders in the south with the district Colca ( province Víctor Fajardo ), in the west with the districts Cangallo ( province Cangallo ) and Chiara ( province Huamanga ), in the north and in the northeast on the districts Acocro and Ocros (both in the province Huamanga ) and in the east to the districts of Concepción and Vilcas Huamán .
