Santa María de Badaín is a church in the Spanish Pyrenees municipality of Tella-Sin in Sobrarbe in the province of Huesca in the autonomous community of Aragon . The parish church of the Diocese of Barbastro-Monzón has the status of a minor basilica from immemorabili and is a protected cultural monument .

history

The remote hamlet of Badaín was originally a nunnery of the Benedictine order . Its Romanesque church at a height of 738 meters was enlarged in the second half of the 16th century, redesigned and the tower added, which today stands out from the rest of the complex. After being only a hermitage at times, it later became a parish church .

description

The east-facing structure was built from rubble and pebbles with cement, the corners were made with ashlar. Two yokes of the single nave nave were made with a ribbed vault. A modern gallery was added in the rear yoke. A chapel with a star rib vault is attached to the nave on the north side, while the chapel on the south side with a barrel vault is in the thickness of the outer wall.

The choir, raised by two steps, comes from the original church. The retracted choir still shows the layout similar to a three-conch choir in the style of San Juan de Toledo de Lanata or Monflorite. During the renovation, the main apse was replaced by a chancel with a flat end, which is covered by a slightly lower pointed barrel vault. The side apse opens on the south wall and is covered with a vault made of tuff stone. It has a small central window and is not visible outside the structure. The square tower with three floors and vaults rises above the chancel. The year "1576" is written below the slate-clad gable roof. A round, attached side tower served as a staircase.

The baptismal font is located in front of today's entrance door and in a chapel, which is also roofed with a rib vault. This baptistery was probably used for diving rites.
