The pale gray ant hatchers ( Myrmotherula menetriesii ) belong to the genus Myrmotherula within the ant bird family (Thamnophilidae) .
The species occurs in Bolivia , Brazil , Ecuador , French Guiana , Guyana , Colombia , Peru , Suriname and Venezuela .
The distribution area includes terra firme , transition zones and evergreen forests up to 500, sometimes up to 1000 m.
The Latin additional species refers to Édouard Ménétries .
features
The bird is 9 to 10 cm tall and weighs between 8 and 9 g. The male is bluish gray with a paler underside, a relatively long tail with white tips and a pale throat. The elytra have white tips and black bands. The female has no markings on the wings, is pale yellow-brown plumage on the breast and underside. Fledglings are similar to the female but are darker overall.
Geographic variation
The following subspecies are recognized:
- M. m. pallida Berlepsch & EJO Hartert , 1902 - Eastern Colombia and southwestern Venezuela to northeastern Peru and northwestern Brazil
- M. m. cinereiventris P. L. Sclater & Salvin , 1868 - Eastern Venezuela, Guyana and northeastern Brazil north of the Amazon
- M. m. menetriesii ( d'Orbigny , 1837), nominate form - Eastern Peru, northwestern Bolivia and southwestern Brazil
- M. m. berlepschi Hellmayr , 1903 - Amazon basin of Brazil and northern Bolivia
- M. m. omissa Todd , 1927 - northeastern Brazil south of the Amazon
voice
The singing consists of conspicuous 10 to 15 thin notes, rising and getting faster.
Way of life
The diet consists of various insects , grasshoppers , beetles and spiders , which are hunted in pairs, alone or in family groups, also together with mixed hunting communities, higher in vegetation than other similar ant hatchers, usually 6 to 20 m above the ground.
The breeding season in Colombia and Venezuela is in February.
Hazardous situation
The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
