Myrmotherula is a genus of insectivorous passerine birds (Passeriformes) fromthe ant bird family (Thamnophilidae).

Together with Epinecrophylla , this genus represents the “typical” ant hatchers : small, short-tailed ant birds in the undergrowth, mostly in mixed hunting communities. Most are found in lowland forests. They are difficult to make out in the dark, dense undergrowth, and the sound often leads to identification.

The generic name was introduced by Philip Sclater in 1858. The type species of the genus is Myrmotherula brachyura .

He is a diminutive of "Myrmothera" and comes from ancient Greek μυρμος murmos , German 'ant' and ancient Greek θηρας thēras , German 'hunter' and means "little ant hunter".

distribution

The species of the genus Myrmotherula occur exclusively in the Neotropics ( Latin America ).

Systematics

Based on molecular genetic studies in 2012, two species were relocated to a new genus Isleria . The genus Myrmotherula forms a paraphyletic group with respect to the genera Formicivora , Myrmochanes , Stymphalornis and Terenura .

species

The genus Myrmotherula is currently assigned to 26 species .
