The Salvadoran ant hatch ( Myrmotherula minor ) belongs to the genus Myrmotherula within the ant bird family (Thamnophilidae) .
The species is endemic to Brazil .
The distribution area includes tropical or subtropical moist lowland forest, evergreen forests in the Andean foothills and secondary forest mostly up to 500, occasionally up to 900 m altitude.
The Latin additional species means smaller , the common name refers to the person who first described it.
features
The bird is about 9 cm tall and weighs around 6 g. The tail is short. The male is gray with a paler underside, the throat and center of the chest have a black spot. The elytra are blackish with white tips, the tail has a black band and white tips. It is similar to the white-flanked ant hatchers ( Myrmotherula axillaris ). The female has a gray cap, the underside is olive-brown, the wings and tail are reddish-brown, the wing-coverts have narrow yellow-brown edges, the throat is whitish, the cheeks are gray. Young birds do not yet have a tail band.
The species is monotypical .
voice
The song is described as unusually complex for ant hatchers, consisting of groups of fast sounds, deeper and slower, lasting for 2 to 4 seconds.
Way of life
The food consists of insects , probably also spiders , which are hunted individually, in pairs or in family groups, mostly in mixed hunting communities, preferably 4 to 8 m above the ground.
The breeding season is not exactly known.
Hazardous situation
The stock is considered to be endangered ( vulnerable ) due to habitat loss .
