features

The species is 9 to 10 cm tall and weighs between 5 and 9 g. It is the only one with strong white flank spots with otherwise dark plumage. Since the bird often flaps its wings nervously, these spots are a striking distinguishing feature. The male is dark gray with a white interscapular spot, wings and tail are blackish, the control feathers have a gray border, the wing-coverts and tail feathers have white tips. The throat, chest and underside are black, the sides are eponymous white. The female is olive-brown on the upper side with a yellow-brown sheen on the trunk, wings and tail are dark brown with light cinnamon-colored edges, the sides of the head are pale-spotted olive-brown, the underside yellow-brown with olive-brown flanks. Young birds look like the females, but the wings are mixed yellow-brown, the underside gray to white.
