The little silver ant hatch ( Myrmotherula sunensis ) belongs to the genus Myrmotherula within the ant bird family (Thamnophilidae) .

The species is found in Brazil , Ecuador , Colombia and Peru .

The distribution area includes tropical or subtropical moist lowland forest, terra firme , but also seasonally flooded areas mostly between 200 and 500 m altitude.

The Latin additional species refers to the Río Suno in Ecuador.

features

The bird is 9 cm tall and has a short, continuously black tail, throat and chest are dark black, otherwise the male is gray with darker wings, white interscapular spot, white spots on the wing covers . The female is ocher-colored without markings on the wings, and cinnamon-colored on the underside. Fledglings resemble the females, but are grayer on the underside and the throat and breast are not yet black or barely black.

Geographic variation

The following subspecies are recognized:

  • M. s. sunensis Chapman , 1925, nominate form - Colombia and Ecuador
  • M. s. yessupi Bond, J , 1950 - Peru and Brazil

voice

The singing consists of 2 to 5 long, thin whistling tones. This is the best way to recognize the species.

Way of life

The food probably consists of insects and spiders that are hunted alone, in pairs or in family groups in the undergrowth, close to the ground or just under 1 m, mostly between 1 and 5 m high, often also in mixed hunting communities.

No information is yet available on the breeding season and the nest.

Hazardous situation

The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
