The gray- winged ant hatchler ( Myrmotherula behni ) belongs to the genus Myrmotherula within the ant bird family (Thamnophilidae) .

The species occurs in Brazil , Ecuador , French Guiana , Guyana , Colombia and Venezuela .

The distribution area includes tropical or subtropical moist mountain forest and evergreen forests on the Andean foothills between 600 and 1800 m altitude.

The Latin additional species refers to Wilhelm Friedrich Georg Behn (1808–1878).

features

The bird is 9 to 10 cm tall and weighs between 7 and 9 g. The male is gray with darker wings, the chest and throat are black, there are no markings on the wings, the tail is black throughout. In the female, the wings, tail and cap are dark brown, the throat is whitish, otherwise the plumage is ocher.

Geographic variation

The following subspecies are recognized:

  • M. b. behni Berlepsch & Leverkühn , 1890, nominated form - Central Colombia and Eastern Ecuador
  • M. b. yavii J. T. Zimmer & Phelps, Sr , 1948, - southern Venezuela and northwestern Brazil
  • M. b. inornata P. L. Sclater , 1890 - Southeast Venezuela, Guyana, and Northern Brazil
  • M. b. camanii Phelps & Phelps, Jr. , 1952 - Southern and Central Venezuela

The singing consists of 4 to 10 clear, simple sloping whistles, about 1 / s.

Way of life

The food consists of small insects and probably also spiders , which are hunted in pairs, alone or in family groups, almost always in mixed hunting communities in the undergrowth usually between 1 and 3 m, in more open terrain also between 4 and 10 m high.

The breeding season is not known.

Hazardous situation

The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
