The species occurs from eastern Panama over western Colombia to northwest Ecuador and in the upper Amazon basin from eastern Colombia to northeast Peru and Brazil .

The distribution area includes evergreen moist deep forest, habitats with larger trees, forest edges , clearings and wooded river edges, in the Amazon basin Terra Firme and Várzea , each usually up to 600, occasionally up to 1100 m altitude.

The Latin additional species comes from the Latin ignotus 'hidden, unknown' .

The species was previously thought to be conspecific with the eastern white-throated ant hatchery ( Myrmotherula brachyura ).

features

The bird is 7 to 8 cm tall and has a tiny tail. The male is black on the upper side with narrow white, indicated yellow tinged stripes, the top of the head is not striped. It has a wide black back eyeliner, white ear covers , a white interscapular spot. The underside is slightly striped in black. The black wings have wide white tips, the flight feathers white edges. Compared to the eastern white-throated ant hatchers ( Myrmotherula brachyura ), the chin stripe is wider, the back of the eye is more distinct and the dotted lines on the underside are less pronounced. The female is distinguished by light stripes on the cap, the missing interscapular spot and clay-colored coloring of the sides of the head.

Geographic variation

The following subspecies are recognized:

  • M. i. ignota Griscom , 1929, nominate form - Eastern Panama, Colombia, and northwest Ecuador
  • M. i. obscura J. T. Zimmer , 1932 - East Colombia to Northeast Peru and Northwest Brazil

The latter is sometimes viewed as a separate species of short-billed ant hatchers ( Myrmotherula obscura ).

Call of the Western White-throated Ant Slipper

voice

The song is described as similar to, but slower than that of the Eastern white-throated ant hatchers ( Myrmotherula brachyura ).

Way of life

The food consists of a large number of small insects that are hunted alone, together with a partner or in families, also in mixed hunting groups at a height of 10 to 40 m. If it hunts together with the eastern white-throated ant hatchers ( Myrmotherula brachyura ), it usually stays more in the treetop.

The breeding season should be in August in Peru, the nest is a 6 cm wide and equally deep bowl, which is hung on a small fork at a height of 9 m.

Hazardous situation

The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
