( Hermann , 1783) |
The eastern white-throated ant hatch ( Myrmotherula brachyura ), Syn. Music [apae] brachyurae , belongs to the genus Myrmotherula within the ant bird family (Thamnophilidae) .
The species occurs in the entire Amazon basin , in the Guyanas and in the southeast of the Orinoco Basin .
The distribution area includes tropical or subtropical moist deep forest, quarry , former tree-lined habitats and terra firme up to 600, occasionally up to 900 m altitude.
The Latin additional species comes from ancient Greek βραχύς brachýs , German 'short' and ancient Greek οὐρά ourá , German 'tail' .
The species was previously thought to be conspecific with the western white-throated ant hatchback ( Myrmotherula ignota ).
features
The little bird is 7 to 8 cm tall and weighs between 6 and 8 g with a tiny tail that gives it its name. The male is black on the vertex and upper side with pronounced white, hinted at yellow-tinged stripes, black back eye, white ear covers , white throat with narrow dark cheek stripes and gray to yellowish-gray unstriped underside. The black wings have broad white tips. The female is distinguished by a clay-brown head and a yellowish-brown breast.
The species is monotypical .
voice
The singing is described as a sharp, accelerating trill or as an uncountable series of short sounds over about 2 seconds, first rising, then falling.
Way of life
The food consists of a large number of small insects and arachnids , which are hunted alone, together with a partner or in families, also in mixed hunting groups at a height of 8 to 25 m. The bird is easier to spot at the edge of the forest. If it hunts together with the yellow-stripe ant hatchers ( Myrmotherula sclateri ), it usually stays at a slightly lower altitude.
Little is known about the breeding season and the type of nest.
Hazardous situation
The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
