Johann Hermann (also written Herrmann ; * December 31, 1738 in Barr ; † October 4, 1800 in Strasbourg ), also Jean Hermann in French , was a French doctor, naturalist, zoologist and author. His botanical author's abbreviation is “ Herrm. ".

Life

Johann Hermann studied at the University of Strasbourg . He successfully completed his diploma in medicine in 1763. Five years later he was appointed professor of medicine. He received another appointment as a philosophy professor in 1778. In addition to medicine and philosophy, he taught pathology, botany and chemistry in three languages ​​(German, Latin and French). In his most important work, Tabula affinitatum animalium , which appeared in 1783, he presented his own system of relationships between species in detail. In this work he was the first author to describe the black-breasted rudder ( Arremon taciturnus ).

In 1804, the city of Strasbourg bought, in addition to its extensive mineral collection, other collections and works by Johann Hermann and handed them over to the Zoological Museum of the city of Strasbourg . This was re-established in 1890 as part of the Imperial University of Strasbourg and moved into a new building; Separate rooms were set up for Hermann's collections.

In 1796 he became a member of the Académie des Sciences .

The Greek tortoise ( Testudo hermanni ) was named after him.
