The Varzea ant hatchers ( Myrmotherula assimilis ) belong to the genus Myrmotherula within the ant bird family (Thamnophilidae) .
The species occurs locally in the Amazon basin on forested river islands in the Amazon and its main tributaries as well as in gallery forests and seasonally flooded habitats (preferably overgrown with heliconias ).
The distribution area includes tropical or subtropical deep forest up to 200 m height.
The Latin additional species comes from the Latin similis 'similar, similar' .
features
The bird is 9 to 10 cm tall. The male is light slate gray throughout with white tips of the wing covers in the form of two bands. The throat and underside are slightly lighter. The iris is brown, the bill blackish, the legs blue-gray. The female is light yellow-brown on the underside with brown-brown wings and two indicated wing bands. In both sexes, a white interscapular spot becomes visible when flapping. The species resembles the pale gray ant hatchers ( Myrmotherula menetriesii ), but occurs together with mixed hunting communities and in terra firme .
Geographic variation
The following subspecies are recognized:
- M. a. assimilis Pelzeln , 1868, nominate form - Eastern Peru, Western Brazil and Northern Bolivia
- M. a. transamazonica Gyldenstolpe , 1951 - Brazil
voice
The chant consists of a sharp, rising, then decaying trill “te-te-te-tu-tutututrrrrr”.
Way of life
The food consists of insects that are hunted in pairs at different heights, mostly not in mixed hunting communities up to medium vegetation height, even in more open landscapes.
The breeding season is not known.
Hazardous situation
The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
