The yunga ant hatch ( Myrmotherula grisea ) belongs to the genus Myrmotherula within the ant bird family (Thamnophilidae) .

The species is endemic to Bolivia and occurs in the western Andean foothills ( La Paz , Cochabamba , Santa Cruz ). Recently it was also found in the extreme southwest of Peru in the Puno region.

The distribution area includes tropical or subtropical dry forest or moist mountain forest at an altitude of 600–1500 m.

The type epithet comes from the Latin griseus 'gray' .

The bird is 8 to 10 cm tall and weighs between 8 and 10 g. The male is uniformly gray, only the wings and tail are darker, rather brown-gray, the under wing-coverts light gray. The female is olive-brown with a grayish cap on the upper side, the tail is dark brown with red-brown edges. The chin and throat are brownish-yellow, the underside ocher-colored with brown flanks. Yellowish-brown spots can be seen in young birds.

The species is monotypical .

The singing is described as a rapid sequence of 6 to 8 sounds "piiyr".

Way of life

The food consists of various insects including grasshoppers and cockroaches , including spiders , which are hunted individually, in pairs or in family groups at 1 to 15 m above the ground.

The breeding season is not known.

Hazardous situation

The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
