The Guiana stick ant hatchers ( Myrmotherula surinamensis ), Syn. Sitta surinamensis , belong to the genus Myrmotherula within the ant bird family (Thamnophilidae) .

The species occurs in southern Venezuela , in Guiana and in the Amazon basin in Brazil .

The distribution area includes tropical or subtropical humid lowland forest, tropical quarry landscape and former forest areas, preferably in the vicinity of water bodies up to 100 or 450 m in height.

The Latin additional species refers to the Suriname region .

Until recently, the species was considered to be conspecific with the Western barbed ant hatchers ( Myrmotherula pacifica ) and the Amazonian barbed ant hatchers ( Myrmotherula multostriata ).

features

The bird is 9 to 10 cm tall and weighs between 7 and 9 g. The male has a black top and cap, each with pronounced white stripes, the wing covers have white tips, the flight feathers have white edges. The interscapular spot is broad, the tail black with white edges and white pointy spots. It has a thin black chin stripe, the underside and throat are dashed in black, the flanks are gray. The female has a rust-colored color on the head, neck, neck and flanks, no chin stripe and no dashed lines on the forehead.

The species is monotypical .

The singing is described as a high trill lasting 3 seconds.

Way of life

The food consists of small insects and arachnids that are often hunted close to the ground up to medium tree height in pairs, usually not in mixed hunting communities.

The breeding season in French Guiana is between August and October. The nest covered with green moss hangs 50 to 100 cm above the water. The clutch usually consists of two eggs.

Hazardous situation

The stock is considered to be endangered ( Vulnerable ).
