The silver ant hatchers ( Myrmotherula longipennis ) belong to the genus Myrmotherula within the ant bird family (Thamnophilidae) .
The species occurs in Bolivia , Brazil , Ecuador , French Guiana , Guyana , Colombia , Peru , Suriname and Venezuela .
The distribution area includes tropical or subtropical moist lowland forest, evergreen forests in the Andes foothills , mostly undergrowth of the forests in Terra Firme , but also seasonally flooded areas mostly below 500, but also up to 1100 m altitude in Tepuis in Venezuela.
The Latin additional species comes from the Latin longus 'lang' and the Latin penna 'feather' .
features
The bird is 9 to 11 cm tall and weighs between 8 and 10 g. The male is gray with a broad black throat and chest patch and black elytra with white tips and white tail tips. The bottom is slightly paler than the top. The female has no markings on the wings. It is olive-brown on the upper side, wings and tail are dark gray-brown, flight feathers and wing-coverts are dark cinnamon-colored, throat and chest are yellow-brown, the underside is white with gray flanks. Fledglings resemble the female.
Geographic variation
The following subspecies are recognized:
- M. l. longipennis pelts , 1868, nominate form - Northwest Amazonia
- M. l. zimmeri Chapman , 1925 –East Ecuador and Northeast Peru
- M. l. garbei Ihering , 1905 - Eastern Peru, south-west Brazil and north-west Bolivia
- M. l. transitiva Hellmayr , 1929 - Brazil
- M. l. ochrogyna Todd , 1927 - Central Brazil
- M. l. paraensis ( Todd , 1920) - Brazil
voice
The song consists of at least 5 long, thin tones and is similar to that of the black banded ant's panties ( Myrmotherula urosticta ).
Way of life
The food consists of insects and spiders , which are looked for alone, in pairs or in family groups, usually just under 2 m above the ground. The bird likes to flutter.
The bowl-shaped nest is mostly built by the female; both parent birds take part in the feeding tasks.
Hazardous situation
The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
