The Highland Antwren ( Myrmotherula schisticolor ), Syn. Formicivora schisticolor , one within the family of Antbirds (Thamnophilidae) for generic Myrmotherula .
The species occurs in Central and South America from southern Mexico to western Ecuador and eastern Peru . It is the most common ant hatch outside of the Amazon basin .
The distribution area includes tropical or subtropical mountain foothills, mountain forest between at least 600 and 2400 m altitude.
The Latin addition of species comes from the Latin schistus 'slate' and the Latin color 'color' .
features
The bird is 9 to 10 cm tall and weighs between 8 and 10 g. The male is dark gray with blackish wings, chest and throat are dark black. It has a hidden white interscapular spot. The elytra have white tips. It is similar to the white-flanked ant hatchers ( Myrmotherula axillaris ) and the Salvadoran ant hatchers ( Myrmotherula minor ), but they are very circumscribed and less dark in color. The female is ocher-colored instead of black, the upper side is gray-olive, the flight feathers and tail are more brown, the wing covers have red-brown edges, the throat and breast are cinnamon-colored. Young birds are similar to females, but do not yet have a black throat spot.
Geographic variation
The following subspecies are recognized:
- M. s. schisticolor ( Lawrence , 1865), nominate form - Southeastern Mexico to Western Ecuador
- M. s. sanctaemartae Allen , 1900 - Northern Colombia and Northern Venezuela
- M. s. interior ( Chapman , 1914) - Eastern Colombia and Eastern Ecuador to Southern Peru
voice
The singing consists of 2 to 3 thin whistling tones about 1 / s.
Way of life
The food consists of various insects and spiders , which are hunted in pairs, alone or in mixed hunting groups on or just above the ground, usually between 1 and 6 m high.
The breeding season in Costa Rica is between March and July, in Venezuela between December and February. The nest is a deep, thinly woven shell, held together with cobwebs and attached to a horizontal fork, usually 1 to 2 m above the ground. The clutch consists of two white or cream-colored eggs.
Hazardous situation
The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
