The Paraná ant hatchers ( Myrmotherula unicolor ), syn. Myrmothera unicolor , belong to the genus Myrmotherula within the ant bird family (Thamnophilidae) .

The species is endemic to Brazil in the southeast.

The distribution area includes tropical or subtropical moist lowland forest and dry scrub steppe, including restinga forest on white sand ("White Sand Forest") up to 500 m altitude.

The Latin additional species means "monochrome".

The species was previously regarded as conspecific with the Alagoas ant hatchers ( Myrmotherula snowi ).

The bird is 9 to 10 cm tall and weighs between 6 and 9 g. The male is gray with a paler underside, the base of the throat has black feathers with gray tips. The female is olive-brown on the upper side, slightly grayer on the cap and neck, the upper side of the tail is yellowish-brown, the wings are gray-brown with reddish-yellow-brown edges. The tail is reddish-yellow-brown, the throat whitish. The underside is predominantly olive with grayer flanks.

The species is monotypical .

The singing is described as a sequence of simple, roughly equally high notes, each only interrupted by short pauses.

Way of life

The diet consists of insects , including spiders , that are hunted individually, in pairs or in family groups alone or in mixed hunting groups.

The breeding season is not exactly known.

The nest consists of an 8 × 6 cm wide and up to 6 cm deep shell made of roots, discarded leaves and fibers from vertigo just 1 to 2 m above the ground in a horizontal fork.

Hazardous situation

The stock is considered to be near threatened by habitat loss .
