The bird is 9 to 10 cm tall and weighs between 7 and 9 g. The male is black and white, on the upper side predominantly black and wide white striped, the wing covers have white tips, the flight feathers white edges. The interscapular spot is white, the tail feathers black with white edges and pointy spots. It has a black chin stripe, the ear covers are unstriped white, the underside and throat are white with black dashes, the flanks are gray. The species differs from the very similar Guiana stick ant panties ( Myrmotherula surinamensis ) by the narrower interscapular spot. The female has no interscapular spot and is cinnamon colored on the elytra, head and chest. Young birds look like a mix between males and females.

The species is monotypical .

voice

The song is described as a slow trill that lasts a few seconds, similar to that of the Guayana barbed ant hatchers ( Myrmotherula surinamensis ) and the Amazonian barbed ant hatchers ( Myrmotherula multostriata ), but with a clear rising pitch and steady speed.

Way of life

The diet consists mainly of insects , which are hunted as a pair, sometimes in mixed hunting communities, mostly at low to medium altitude.

The breeding season is not exactly known.

Hazardous situation

The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
