The Chiara district is located in the Huamanga Province in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district has an area of ​​495 km². The 2017 census counted 5698 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 4469, in 2007 it was 6307. The district administration is located in the 3527  m high village of Chiara with 257 inhabitants (as of 2017). Chiara is 13 km east-southeast of the provincial and regional capital Ayacucho (Huamanga).

Geographical location

The Chiara district is located in the south of the Huamanga province. It has a longitudinal extent in NNW-SSE direction of 40 km and a maximum width of about 19 km. The district is located in the Andean highlands . In the far north it reaches up to the metropolitan area of ​​the regional capital. The northern district is drained via the Río Huata, the west via the Río Cachi and the south via the Río Pampas .

The district of Chiara borders in the south on the district of Cangallo , in the southwest on the district Los Morochucos (both in the province of Cangallo ), in the northwest on the districts Vinchos , Socos , Carmen Alto and district San Juan Bautista , in the northeast on the district Tambillo , to the east to the Acocro district and to the southeast to the Vischongo district .
