The Luis Carranza district is located in the La Mar province in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was established on December 11, 1963. The district was named after Luis Carranza Ayarza (1843–1898), Senator for Ayacucho in the Congress of the Republic of Peru .

The district has an area of ​​213 km². The 2017 census counted 1337 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2380, in 2007 it was 2089. The district administration is located in the 2952  m high village of Pampas with 179 inhabitants (as of 2017). Pampas is about 25 km southeast of the provincial capital San Miguel .

Geographical location

The Luis Carranza district is located in the Peruvian Central Cordillera in the extreme southwest of the province of La Mar. The district is located on the west bank of the north-flowing Río Pampas . Its left tributary Río Pampa Chico crosses the district in a south-easterly direction and drains it.

The Luis Carranza district borders on the Ocros and Acocro districts (both in the Huamanga province ) to the south and west, the Chilcas district to the north and the Huaccana district ( Chincheros province ) to the east .
