The district of Chilcas is located in the province of La Mar in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was founded on October 17, 1893. It has an area of ​​154 km². The 2017 census counted 1738 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1759, in 2007 it was 2617. The seat of the district administration is the 3220  m high village of Chilcas with 243 inhabitants (as of 2017). Chilcas is about 20 km south-southeast of the provincial capital San Miguel .

Geographical location

The district of Chilcas is located in the Peruvian Central Cordillera in the central southwest of the province of La Mar. The district is bordered in the east by the Río Pampas and in the north by its left tributary Río Torobamba .

The district of Chilcas borders in the south on the district Luis Carranza , in the extreme west on the district Acocro ( province Huamanga ), in the northwest on the district San Miguel , in the northeast on the district Anco and in the east on the district Huaccana ( province Chincheros ).
