The Chungui district is located in the La Mar province in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district emerged during the founding years of the Republic of Peru. It has an area of ​​519 km². The 2017 census counted 4545 inhabitants. The seat of the district administration is the 3499  m high village of Chungui with 627 inhabitants (as of 2017). Chungui is 45 km southeast of the provincial capital San Miguel .

Geographical location

The district of Chungui is located in the Peruvian Central Cordillera in the central southeast of the province of La Mar. The district is bounded in the southwest by the Río Pampas flowing to the southeast and in the northeast by the Río Apurímac , which flows north .

The district of Chungui borders in the southwest with the districts El Porvenir and Huaccana (both in the province of Chincheros ), in the north with the district Anco , in the northeast with the districts Villa Virgen and Vilcabamba (both in the province La Convención ) and in the southeast with the Oronccoy district .
