The Inkawasi district is located in the La Convención province in the Cusco region in south-central Peru . The district founded on January 2, 1857 has an area of ​​773 km². On November 19, 2014 Inkawasi was spun off from the Vilcabamba district . At the 2017 census, there were 4892 residents in the district. The district administration is located in the village of Amaybamba with 809 inhabitants (as of 2017).

Geographical location

The Inkawasi district is located in the extreme southwest of the La Convención province, about 140 km west of the regional capital, Cusco . It has a maximum length in NW-SE direction of about 58 km. The district is located on the southwest flank of the partially glaciated Cordillera Vilcabamba mountain range . The peaks Choquesafra ( 5152  m ), Azulcocha ( 5269  m ) and Coisopacana ( 5176  m ) rise in the north and northeast of the district. The Río Apurímac forms the southern district boundary.

The Inkawasi district borders in the north and east on the district Vilcabamba, in the southeast on the district Huanipaca ( province Abancay ), in the southwest on the district Oronccoy and in the far west on the district Chungui (both in the province La Mar ).
