Nagayo Sensai
Nagayo Sensai ( Japanese 長與專齋 ; born 16th October 1838 in Omura in Hizen Province ; died 8. September 1902 ) was a Japanese physician of the late Edo and Meiji period .
life and work
Nagayo Sensai was born into a family of doctors belonging to Ōmura- Han . At the age of 16 he went to Osaka and studied under the doctor Ogata Kōan (1810-1863).
After Nagayo served as the director of the Nagasaki Medical School (長崎 医 学校), he visited America and Europe as a member of the Iwakura Mission . After his return he was responsible for the establishment of a department for medical matters in the Ministry of Education, for the establishment of a vaccination law and for the formulation of comprehensive medical legislation, the "Isei" (医 政).
Nagayo supported the establishment of the "Tōkyō Igakkō" (東京 医 学校), which later became the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tokyo . He was their dean from 1875 to 1878. He is buried in the Aoyama cemetery .
