The Huayopata district is located in the La Convención province of the Cusco region in south-central Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of ​​530 km². At the 2017 census, 5582 people lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 8878, in 2007 it was 5772. The district administration is located in the 1524  m high town of Huyro with 1925 inhabitants (as of 2017). The Huamanmarca archaeological site is located in the district .

Geographical location

The district of Huayopata is located in the southeast of the province of La Convención, 85 km northwest of the regional capital Cusco . The district is located in the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera . It includes the catchment area of the Río Lucumayo , a right tributary of the Río Urubamba .

The district of Huayopata borders on the districts of Santa Teresa and Maranura to the west, on the northeast on the district of Ocobamba and on the south on the districts of Ollantaytambo and Machupicchu (both in the province of Calca ).
