Irma Anneli Kukkasjärvi (born February 8, 1941 ; died October 8, 2011 ) was a Finnish textile designer.

Career

Kukkasjärvi graduated from the Finnish College of Art and Design in 1968 and was a lecturer and professor of textile design there from 1995 to 1997. The Finnish Association for Industrial Design named her textile designer of the year in 1984.

She studied with Kaj Franck and, under his guidance, subjected herself to a strict functionalism geared towards industrial product design. In the 1970s she freed herself from this restriction and also realized textile art based on purely aesthetic considerations.

Kukkasjärvi became internationally known for its monumental public art textiles. Her textiles can be found in the Finnish parliament building and in the official apartment of the Finnish president. Her designs adorn numerous churches and she designed series for the Marimekko company .

Kukkasjärvi was awarded the Pro Finlandia Medal for Artists and Writers in 1985.
