Marimekko is the name of a Finnish listed company that sells clothing and housewares of its own design, mainly in company-owned stores.

history

The Marimekko company was founded in 1951 by Armi and Viljo Ratia.

The turnover in 2009 was 72.5 million euros. In 2015, the brand's worldwide sales reached € 186 million, and the company's net sales reached € 96 million. A sustainability strategy was published on June 16, 2016, which will last until 2020 and contain the following 5 specifications. The aim is to halve the CO 2 emissions from production.

  • Design of timeless, long-lasting, functional products
  • Inspiration and commitment from customers and employees
  • Promote responsible practice in the supply chain
  • Resource efficiency and environmental protection
  • Offer inspiring and responsible jobs

The shops are characterized by a simple design . A special feature of Marimekko is the design, which changes from year to year, but is always based on the same basic principles: T-shirts (which are always available in long-sleeved versions) have two-tone horizontal stripes and shirts have two-tone horizontal stripes. There are only a few color combinations per year. Often large-scale flower motifs, which contain simple color combinations, are typical annual designs. In all other areas, too, the design by Marimekko stands out for its simplicity.

The design by Marimekko became particularly well known in the 1960s and 70s.
