Vimto
Vimto is a red carbonated soft drink from Great Britain that is sold worldwide, mainly in countries of the Commonwealth of Nations. It contains the juice of grapes , raspberries and black currants and tastes similar to the lemonade Fanta Wild Berries from Coca-Cola GmbH, which was marketed in 2000 but has since been discontinued .
Vimto was developed in 1908 by Manchester herbal importer John Noel Nichols , who saw the opening of the soft drinks market because of the abstinence movement and a passage of the 1908 Licensing Act that sought to drastically reduce the number of licensing requirements in England and Wales . It was originally sold under the name Vimtonic, which Nichols shortened to Vimto in 1912.
It is currently being operated by Vimto Soft Drinks Ltd. , a subsidiary of Nichols plc . It has gained cult status among its consumers, celebrating its centenary in 2008.
Vimto was also used in sweets.
Vimto is also manufactured under license in Saudi Arabia and Yemen , although the composition can be different and more concentrated. In Gambia it is produced under license by Banjul Breweries , where Vimto has the same market presence as Coca-Cola . On the Solomon Islands, the varieties VIMTO Cola, VIMTO Orange and VIMTO Raspberry are produced under license by the local brewery Solomon Breweries.
