Armi Maria Ratia (born July 13, 1912 in Pälkjärvi , † October 3, 1979 in Helsinki ) ( born Airaksinen ) was a Finnish textile designer and co-founder of the Marimekko company .

Career

Ratia was born in Pälkjärvi in ​​what is now the Republic of Karelia . Her father owned a general store and the mother was a teacher in a primary school . She studied textile design in Helsinki and graduated in this subject in 1935. In the same year she married Viljo Ratia. The marriage had three children. More than 15 years passed before the married couple founded Marimekko in 1951. Prior to that, Ratia started working at Printex , the company her husband founded in 1949. Printex made wax canvases and printed motifs on them. Later at Marimekko, Ratia performed almost all management functions that one can exercise in a company, starting with creative director , textile designer together with Maija Isola , copywriter , general manager and head of public relations . In 2011, Marimekko operated 84 stores around the world. Ratia died in Helsinki in 1979 and is buried in the Hietaniemi cemetery there.
