The Río Negro district is located in the Satipo Province in the Junín region in central Peru . The district was established on March 26, 1965. It has an area of 488 km². The 2017 census counted 30,651 residents. In 1993 the population was 18,772, in 2007 25,981. The district administration is based in the 650 m high town of Río Negro with 5262 inhabitants (as of 2017). Río Negro is located 5 km north-northwest of the provincial capital Satipo .
Geographical location
The Río Negro district is located in the northwest of the Satipo Province on the eastern flank of the Peruvian Central Cordillera . Along the western district boundary , the Río Ipoqui runs north, the Río Perené runs along the northern district boundary to the east.
The district of Río Negro borders in the northwest with the district Pichanaqui ( province Chanchamayo ), in the northeast with the district Río Tambo and in the southeast and south with the district Satipo .
