The haddock ( Melanogrammus aeglefinus ) is a food fish from the cod family (Gadidae), which occurs in the seas of the temperate zones .

features

Haddock fish can be up to one meter long and weigh 14 kilograms. Your upper jaw is longer than the lower jaw, which has a short barbel . The snout is wider than the diameter of the eyes. The sideline is black. There is a large black spot above the pectoral fin.

Occurrence

The haddock lives in the European North Atlantic from the Bay of Biscay over the North Sea to the Barents Sea and the White Sea . It is also found in the Baltic Sea to Bornholm , around Iceland , on the south coast of Greenland , in the western Atlantic around Newfoundland and on the coast of the northeastern USA .

Way of life

Haddock fish live close to the sea floor at depths of ten to 200 meters. They feed primarily on the spawn of herring and capelin , but also on worms, brittle stars , mussels, crabs and fry. The fish spawn from March to June in very salty water, at temperatures of 5 ° C to 7 ° C, at depths of 50 to 150 meters. A female can lay 100,000 to 1.5 million eggs that float freely in the water and slowly drift to the surface of the water. The larvae hatch after one to three weeks, depending on the temperature, and are then 5 mm long. With a length of 5 to 10 cm, they transition to life near the sea floor. After a year they are 15 to 18 cm long. In the North Sea they are sexually mature at a length of 30 to 40 cm at three to four years, on the coast of Northern Norway they only reach reproductive capacity at 40 to 70 cm in length.

use

The haddock is caught with trawls and longlines and is marketed as fresh or frozen fish fillets and, especially in Great Britain , smoked .
