Valdres is a 5406 km² landscape in central southern Norway , which is located between Gudbrandsdal and Hallingdal . Valdres is located in the southwest of the province ( Fylke ) Innlandet above the lake Sperillen .

Valdres covers the area of ​​the municipalities of Nord-Aurdal , Sør-Aurdal , Øystre Slidre , Vestre Slidre , Vang and Etnedal . The most important city in the area is Fagernes , where there is also an airport.

Valdres connects the eastern part of Norway ( Østlandet ) with Bergen and the Jotunheimen mountain ranges . The most important rivers are the Begna and Etna . The European route E 16 is the main traffic artery alongside RV 51. The 109 km long Valdres Railway ( Oslo -) Eina-Fagernes was shut down for passenger traffic as early as 1988. Modest freight traffic continued until 1999.

Important lakes are the Tyin , Bygdin and Vinstri .

economy

Valdres has about 18,000 inhabitants. Historically, the area lives from agriculture and increasingly also from tourism. The region offers a particularly attractive range of activities for hikers. The forests of Begnadalen and Vassfaret, as well as the mountains of Jotunheimen, attract travelers with hiking trails of all levels of difficulty. The coniferous forest border is about 900 m above sea level.
