The Marias River is a left tributary of the Missouri River in the US state of Montana .

The Marias River is 338 km long and is formed by the confluence of the Cut Bank Creek (left, 120 km long) and the Two Medicine River (right, 97 km long) in Blackfoot - Indian Reservation east of Glacier National Park . The headwaters of the Marias River arise in the southern Lewis Range , a mountain range on the eastern flank of the Rocky Mountains . The Marias River flows east through the Great Plains . It is dammed up from the Tiber Dam to the Lake Elwell reservoir. The Teton River flows into the Marias River from the right, before it reaches the Missouri River at Loma . The highest monthly outflows are measured in June.

The Marias River is below the Tiber Dam to its confluence with the Missouri River a popular river for whitewater kayakers , who in the Class I is classified as easy. It is also used for other leisure activities.

The river got its name in 1805 by the expedition of Lewis and Clark , who first considered the Marias River to be the main arm of the Missouri. The river was named after Maria Wood, a cousin of Meriwether Lewis .
