Gjendesheim is a small town at the eastern end of Lake Gjende in Norway . It is located on the edge of the Jotunheimen National Park in the municipality of Vågå der Fylke Innlandet .

Actually, the place only consists of the hiking hut of the same name owned by the Norwegian hiking club Den Norske Turistforening (DNT), a parking lot with a kiosk ( Gjendeosen ), a campsite and some more distant huts. Most of the time, Gjendesheim is equated with the DNT hut.

At Gjendesheim the - natural and unregulated - Gjende flows into the river Sjoa . The height is just above that of the lake at 994  moh.

Gjendesheim is a popular starting point for hiking tours in Jotunheimen. In particular, the path over the Besseggen to Memurubu is one of the most popular hiking routes in Norway. Gjendesheim can be easily reached by car via a 2 km junction from Riksvei 51.

A particularly well-known personality here was the reindeer hunter, mountain hiker and free thinker Jo Gjende (1794–1884), who lived for a long time at Gjendeosen near Gjendesheim. His hut still stands today. It has been restored and can be visited.
