Besseggen (or Besseggi ) is a mountain ridge in the Norwegian municipality of Vågå in the province of Innlandet . Besseggen is in the east of Jotunheimen , between the lakes Gjende and Bessvatnet. The name "Besseggen" roughly means "Sensengrat". The highest point is called Veslfjellet and reaches a height of 1743 moh.
In the valley there is the approximately 18 kilometers long green lake Gjende ( 984 moh. ). 400 meters above it lies the almost black lake Bessvatnet ( 1373 moh. ). Both are only separated by a 50 m wide land formation called the "bandet". The starting point of most tourist tours is the village of Gjendesheim . From there you can take a boat to the Memurubu hut in summer , from which you can easily climb. In winter the path is difficult and only recommended for adequately equipped hikers. Around 30,000 people hike the Besseggengrat every year. The view down to the two lakes is one of Norway's most famous photo opportunities.
The Besseggengrat is possibly the narrow ridge in Henrik Ibsen's play Peer Gynt , over which the title hero claims to have ridden on a “goat”.
