Vågsfjord

The Vågsfjord is one of the northern approaches to the Nordfjord in the Fylke (province) Vestland in Norway .

The fjord

It runs for about 8.5 km from northwest to southeast between the islands of Husevågøy in the south and Vågsøya in the north and administratively belongs to the municipality of Kinn . The Fåfjord , a second northern entrance to the Nordfjord, runs parallel to it on the south side of Husevågøya between this island and the island of Bremangerland .

The western entrance from the North Sea into the fjord is between the north-western cape of the island Husevågøy, Hovdenes with the Hovdenes beacon in the south and the headland Vombanes on Vågsøya in the north. To the east of Vombanes are the small villages Vågsvåg and Holvik on the north bank. The town of Måløy , an important fishing port, is located on the southeast side of Vågsøya on Ulvesund , which runs from the Vågsfjord between Vågsøya and the mainland to the northeast into the Sildegap and thus the North Sea south of Stadlandet . The village of Husevåg is located on the north shore of Husevågøy Island. To the south-east of Maløy, a branch of the Vågsfjord, the Skavøypollen, branches off to the east; the small town of Tennebø lies on its north bank . The Vågsfjord ends soon after on the north side of the island Gangsøya, where the Nordfjord begins.

traffic

There is a car ferry , the far west across the Nordfjord, across the Vågsfjord from Måløy to the southern end of Husvågøya and on across the Fåfjord to Oldeide on Bremangerland. The provincial road Rv15 runs along the north side of the fjord to Måloy. From there the Fv621 goes along the north bank of the fjord to Holvik and Vågsvåg. On Husvågøya, Fv 624 runs along almost the entire north side of the island.
