Mekonnen Mesghena
Mekonnen Mesghena is a German journalist and speaker for “Migration & Diversity” at the Heinrich Böll Foundation .
Mesghena was born in Eritrea, then annexed by Ethiopia ; he has lived in Germany since 1980, where he was naturalized in the early 1990s. He studied journalism and history at the Technical University of Dortmund and completed a traineeship at WDR . He was the spokesman for the “Third World Journalists Network” and in 1993 co-founded Media Watch Germany . After the end of the Eritrean War of Independence , he got involved in the restructuring of the local radio. He has been working for the Heinrich Böll Foundation since 1995.
At the end of 2012, he wrote a letter to Thienemann Verlag and asked - ultimately successfully - to delete the terms "niggers", "Turks", "little Chinese", "gypsies" etc. from Otfried Preussler 's children's book The Little Witch , This sparked a debate about the discriminatory use of language in children's books, which also received international attention.
