The Hornelen is a mountain in the municipality of Bremanger in the Norwegian province of Vestland . The mountain is located at the eastern end of the island Bremangerlandet on the Strait of Frøysjøen in the Norwegian region of Nordfjord . At 860 meters, Hornelen is the highest cliff in Europe and has long been used as a landmark for shipping. The hike to the summit of the Hornelen takes about 4 hours from Berleneset . The horizontal distance from the summit to the sea is approximately 500 meters. About 1 kilometer west of the cliff is the highest point on the island of Bremangerlandet , Svartevassegga with a height of 889 meters. The rock of Hornelen consists of sandstone of the Devonian period and is an important part of the geology of Norway.
