Fjell (Norway)

Fjell was a municipality in the Norwegian province ( Fylke ) Hordaland (became part of Vestland in 2020 ) west of Bergen . Fjell's administrative seat was Straume on the island of Litle-Sotra. As part of the local government reform in Norway , Fjell and Sund merged with Øygarden on January 1, 2020 .

26,166 inhabitants lived in an area of ​​148 km² (as of January 1, 2019). The municipality number was 1246. The last mayor was Marianne Sandahl Bjorøy ( Ap ).

The municipality consists of several islands, including Bildøy, Bjorøy and Litle-Sotra and the northern part of Sotra. The southern part of Sotra belonged to the municipality of Sund. The neighboring commune in the north was Øygarden . Across the Hjeltefjord in the northeast is the island of Askøy , which also forms its own municipality.

Fjell was a growth commune after the Sotra Bridge ( Sotrabroen ) was completed in 1971 . Since then, its population has risen from under 7,000 to over 26,000.

A dual carriageway into the center of Bergen has reduced travel time from the community center in Straume to around 15 minutes.
