Lézat is a town and commune Déléguée in the French commune of Hauts de Bienne with 188 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Lézat is located at 724  m , about 13 kilometers north-northeast of the city of Saint-Claude (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in a panoramic location on a terrace on a sunny slope around 180 m above the deeply cut river of the Bienne , south of the Forêt de la Joux Devant.

The area of the 5.75 km² Commune déléguée covers a section of the French Jura. The southern border runs along the Bienne, which flows here in an erosion valley with several turns to the southwest. From the course of the river, the area extends northwards over a wooded slope criss-crossed by rock bands onto the terrace of Lézat and the ledge of Les Mouillés. This is followed in the north by the ridge of the Bois de la Pontoise ( 940  m ) and the Bois des Ecolets . This ridge, which forms an anticline of the Jura folds , belongs to the broad ridge of the Forêt de la Joux Devant . At 1115  m , the highest point in Lézat is reached on the summit of the Bois des Ecolets. The area is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

The commune déléguée Lézat includes the hamlet of Les Mouillés ( 865  m ) on a ledge above the valley of the Bienne and various individual farms. Neighboring communities of Lézat were Grande-Rivière in the north, Morbier and La Mouille in the east, Longchaumois in the south and Villard-sur-Bienne and Château-des-Prés in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the parish of La Rixouse. In the 18th century it was the location of a forge.

The municipality of Lézat was merged with Morez and La Mouille to form the Commune nouvelle Hauts de Bienne with effect from January 1, 2016 . It belonged to the Arrondissement of Saint-Claude and the Canton of Morez .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Lézat was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture , in particular cattle and dairy farming, and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime the village has also turned into a place of residence. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Morbier to La Rixouse . Another road connection is with Château-des-Prés.
