geography

La Mouille is located at 913  m , four kilometers southwest of Morez and about 16 km northeast of the city of Saint-Claude (as the crow flies). The street village extends in the Jura , on a terrace south of the deeply carved river of the Bienne , on the northern edge of the Bois du Bevet.

The area of the 8.06 km² large Commune déléguée covers a section of the French Jura. The terrace of La Mouille, which lies at an average of 920  m, serves as the settlement area . It drops steeply to the north and west to the valley of the Bienne, which is deep canyon-like around 300 m into the surrounding plateaus. The densely wooded slopes are criss-crossed by ledges in various places. The area of the Commune déléguée extends to the south on the wide ridge of the Bois du Bevet , on which the highest point of La Mouille is reached at 1105  m . In geological terms, this ridge forms an anticline of the Jura folds . The area is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

In addition to the actual village, the Commune déléguée La Mouille also includes several hamlets , groups of farms and individual farms, including (all on the terrace of La Mouille):

  • Le Bourgeat d'Aval ( 924  m )
  • Le Bourgeat d'Amont ( 920  m )
  • Les Lattes ( 924  m )

Neighboring towns of La Mouille are Morbier in the north, Morez in the east, Longchaumois in the south and Lézat in the west.

history

The origin of La Mouille is considered to be the Nigro Medis priory founded in the 9th century, which was dependent on the monastery of Saint-Oyend-de-Joux, later the Abbey of Saint-Claude. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Since the 17th century, the residents secured their livelihood not only from agriculture but also from the manufacture of nails.

The municipality of La Mouille was merged with Lézat and Morez to form the Commune nouvelle Hauts de Bienne with effect from January 1, 2016 . It belonged to the Arrondissement of Saint-Claude and the Canton of Morez .

Attractions

The village church of La Mouille was built in the 18th century and remodeled in the 19th century. The Saint-Isidore chapel dates from the 18th century. The former priory house (15th century) has been converted into a school.
