Pylkönmäki is a former municipality in central Finland and is now part of the city of Saarijärvi .

Pylkönmäki is located 33 km west of the center of Saarijärvi in the hills of Suomenselkä . In Soidinmäki this ridge reaches an impressive height of 235 m for Finland. The municipality Pylkönmäki had an area of 392.4 km² (of which 25.6 km² inland water) and included the towns of Kukko, Kuoppala, Mahlu, Paajala, Puolimatka and Pääjärvi in addition to the main town of the same name. The village's wooden church was built in 1860 according to plans by K. Kuorikoski and redesigned in 1927 under the direction of Alvar Aalto .

As an independent municipality, Pylkönmäki was separated from Saarijärvi in 1914. Like many remote rural communities in Finland, Pylkönmäki has long been affected by rural exodus. In 1963 the municipality still had 2405 inhabitants, but with 936 inhabitants (2008) it was one of the smallest municipalities in Finland. Therefore, Pylkönmäki was incorporated into the city of Saarijärvi at the beginning of 2009.
