geography

Les Nans is located at 670  m , about seven kilometers northeast of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , in a closed valley basin in the upper Angillon , between the heights of the Forêt de la Fresse in the west and the Forêt de la Joux in the east.

The area of the 8.05 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by a valley basin oriented in north-south direction, which is 660  m on average and has a maximum width of one kilometer and a length of around four kilometers. The Angillon rises at the foot of a rock face on the eastern edge of the valley basin, which initially flows north and drains the area to the Ain . The valley basin of Les Nans is flanked on all sides by around 200 m high steep slopes on which rock walls emerge in various places. In the west, the border runs on the Jura ridge of the Forêt de la Fresse ( 886  m ). To the east, the municipal area extends to the edge of the plateau of the second Jura plateau and reaches the highest elevation of Les Nans at 906  m on the Sauget (Forêt de la Joux) .

The hamlet of Petit Nans ( 660  m ) in the Angillon Valley belongs to Les Nans . Neighboring municipalities of Les Nans are Chapois in the north, Onglières and Mournans-Charbonny in the east, Équevillon in the south and Saint-Germain-en-Montagne , Moutoux , Le Latet and Le Larderet in the west.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Les Nans was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses, mainly wood processing (furniture, toys). Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Équevillon via Les Nans to Chapois. Another road connection is with Moutoux.
