Équevillon is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Équevillon is 616 m above sea level. M., about three kilometers northeast of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on a plateau north of the Loudaine valley, between Mont Rivel in the west and the Forêt de la Fresse in the east.

The area of ​​the 4.84 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The eastern and southern borders always run along the Loudaine , a stream that rises in the Forêt de la Fresse, then sunk into an erosion valley and flows westwards and its water flows into the Ain . From the creek, the community area extends northward over a steep slope to the plateau of Équevillon, which is on average 610 m above sea level. M. and has a width of about one kilometer. This plateau is flanked in the west by the isolated mountain of Mont Rivel , on which at 812 m above sea level. M. the highest point of Équevillon is reached. To the east, the communal soil extends into the extensive forest of the Forêt de la Fresse (up to 750 m above sea level).

history

The municipality of Équevillon was settled very early. The menhirs in the Forêt de la Fresse are evidence of prehistoric times . During the Gallo-Roman period, there was a temple complex and a settlement on Mont Rivel.

In the 12th century, a castle settlement developed here, which was built in 1479 together with Montrivel Castle by troops of King Louis XI. were razed to the ground. At that time, Équevillon was a small settlement at the foot of the castle hill. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

With 582 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Équevillon is one of the small communities in the Jura department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been around 120 people, a marked increase in population has been recorded since the early 1960s. Since then, the number of inhabitants has more than quadrupled.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Équevillon was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. There are also some small and medium-sized businesses today, including a foundry. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, mainly in Champagnole.

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is close to the main D471 road from Champagnole to Pontarlier . There are other road connections with Vannoz and Saint-Germain-en-Montagne.
