Cuvier is a municipality in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Cuvier is located at 825 m , about 15 kilometers northeast of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The clustered village extends in the Jura , on the extensive plateau that connects to the north of the Val de Mièges, southeast of the forest area Forêt Domaniale de la Joux.
The area of the 10.32 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The entire area is occupied by a plateau, which averages 830 m . It shows only very small differences in relief and is mainly covered by meadow and pasture land, in the northern part also by forest. The high plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. To the north, the municipality extends to the wooded peaks of Longchaux ( 885 m ) and Bois du Mont , on which the highest point of Cuvier is reached at 886 m .
The hamlet of La Gaudine ( 819 m ) at the southern foot of the summit of the Bois du Mont as well as some individual farms belong to Cuvier . Neighboring communities of Cuvier are Boujailles and Courvières in the north, Censeau in the east and south and Esserval-Tartre in the west.
history
Various finds indicate that the municipality of Cuvier was already settled in the Neolithic and Gallo-Roman times. A Cuvier chapel is mentioned in writing in the 13th century. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the Nozeroy rule . Together with Franche-Comté , it came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
The village church of Cuvier was built in Gothic style, but later redesigned several times. The choir has been preserved from the time it was built, while the nave dates from the 17th century.

With 262 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Cuvier is one of the small communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (300 people were still counted in 1886), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1960s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Cuvier was a village dominated by agriculture, especially cattle breeding and dairy farming. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is close to the main D471 road from Champagnole to Pontarlier . Other road connections exist with Censeau, Boujailles and Courvières.
