Marco Kurth (born August 18, 1978 in Lutherstadt Eisleben ) is a former German soccer player and today's soccer coach who is currently active in the youth development work of RB Leipzig .

Player career

Kurth began his career at SSV Klostermansfeld and later switched to Dynamo Eisleben . The midfielder then played for Halleschen FC until 1995 . At the age of 17 he went to VfB Leipzig . At VfB, Kurth made his debut in the 2nd Bundesliga in 1997/98 . He came on the 8th match day of the season, on September 29, 1997, against KFC Uerdingen 05 from the 84th minute for Ronny Kujat, who was replaced by coach Sigfried Held . In the course of the season Kurth came to seven more missions, but could not prevent his team from relegating just at the end of the season.

In the summer of 2000, coach Gerd Schädlich lured him to FC Erzgebirge Aue . Kurth became a regular player there straight away. With Aue, he won promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga in 2002/03 as the relay winner of the Regionalliga Nord . From 2003/04 to 2005/06 Kurth played 90 games (4 goals) in the 2nd Bundesliga and achieved good placements with FC Erzgebirge Aue. In the following seasons he was one of the regulars in the Auer midfield and was substitute captain alongside Jörg Emmerich .

After the relegation of FC Erzgebirge, where he played for eight years, Kurth moved to Energie Cottbus in the Bundesliga for the 2008/09 season on a free transfer . It was his first and so far only contract with a top division club. In his first season in Lausitz, however, he only made eight appearances. The midfielder made his debut in Germany's top football class on October 28, 2008 against Arminia Bielefeld , when coach Bojan Prašnikar called him into the starting line-up. Cottbus was relegated at the end of the season. It wasn't until the following year that Kurth made his breakthrough with the red-whites and became a regular player. In May 2010, the club extended his contract to summer 2011. At the 2010/11 DFB Cup , he reached the semi-finals with Cottbus, which they lost 2-1 to MSV Duisburg . After his contract was renewed for a year, Cottbus and Kurth parted ways at the end of January 2012 because he was looking for a new sporting perspective.

On January 31, 2012, regional league team 1. FC Magdeburg signed him until June 2013. In summer 2012, he was appointed captain by the new coach Andreas Petersen. He won the Saxony-Anhalt Cup with 1. FC Magdeburg on May 31, 2013 . After losing the DFB Cup game against FC Energie Cottbus in August 2013, Kurth criticized the team's performance in a TV interview, whereupon Andreas Petersen dropped him as captain. Petersen announced that Kurth would no longer make a game under his direction. Kurth's career was over.

Coaching career

Since September 2013 Kurth has been working in the junior performance center of 1. FC Magdeburg. Sports director Mario Kallnik wanted to win him over as coach of the U-17 after his career ended. Kurth, who has the A license, accepted and led the team into the B-Junior Bundesliga in the first year. In the 2014/15 season and 2015/16 season they held the class. In the 2016/17 season, Kurth acquired his football instructor license at the Hennes-Weisweiler-Akademie . He received the UEFA Pro license on March 20, 2017 .
