Garrett Burnett (born September 23, 1975 in Coquitlam , British Columbia ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey and lacrosse player .

Career

Garrett Burnett began his career in 1994 in the Canadian Junior League OHL with Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and also played for league rival Kitchener Rangers during his first season . Without drafting he switched to the professional camp and played in 1995/96 for a total of five teams in three different lower-class leagues.

For the next two years he made a name for himself in the East Coast Hockey League and the American Hockey League almost exclusively for his tough game. While he rarely scored more than ten points in a season, he usually collected more than 300 penalty minutes in a year.

In 1998 he was signed by the San Jose Sharks , but played two years exclusively for their AHL farm team , the Kentucky Thoroughblades . There he set a personal record in the 1999/2000 season with 506 penalty minutes in 56 games. His total of 692 penalty minutes is a franchise record. He then moved to the IHL for the Cleveland Lumberjacks , where he spent the 2000/01 season, before he spent the following two years in the United Hockey League with the New Haven Knights and in the AHL with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks and the Hartford Wolf Pack played.

In the summer of 2003 he received a contract with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in the NHL and was part of the NHL squad all season, completed 39 games and scored one goal and two assists. There were also 184 penalty minutes that he had collected through 22 fistfights on the ice, among other things.

When the 2004/05 NHL season was canceled because of the lockout , Burnett played in the UHL for the Danbury Trashers before he signed a one-year contract with the Dallas Stars at the beginning of the 2005/06 season . He was not used in the NHL throughout the season, but played for the Dallas farm team, the Iowa Stars from the AHL and the Phoenix Roadrunners in the ECHL.

In the summer of 2006 he changed the sport and got a contract with the Arizona Sting in the National Lacrosse League . However, he never played a league game for the team, but is still in the squad.

At the beginning of the 2006/07 season Burnett played in the lower-class ice hockey league Ligue Nord-Américaine de Hockey for the Summum Chiefs de Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu , before he threw an ice hockey goal at an opposing goalkeeper and later in one in his fourth league game Brawl was involved. Burnett was suspended from the league for the remainder of the season.

On January 11, 2007 it was announced that Burnett had been in a coma since December 26, 2006 and was being treated in a hospital. Burnett was at a bar with friends in the suburbs of Vancouver , where there was a gang bang. After Burnett and his friends left the bar, they were attacked by the group and Burnett was hit several times in the head. The police are investigating, but no charges have been brought. According to Burnett's family, he will not be permanently harmed and is feeling much better. After four months in hospital, he sued the bar's two bouncers, who didn't intervene when Burnett was attacked.

Garrett Burnett was not able to set any special accents in the sporting field in the course of his career, but was mostly in action for his teams as an enforcer who lets his fists fly and collects penalty minutes. In 469 professional ice hockey games, he scored 24 goals and gave 30 assists. The whole thing is trumped by 3,016 penalty minutes.
