history
Ice hockey in Arizona
The first professional ice hockey team in the US state of Arizona was settled in 1967 and already played in the Western Hockey League under the name Phoenix Roadrunners . The Roadrunners took part in the WHL up to and including the 1973/74 season before they asked for admission to the World Hockey Association after they had won the Patrick Cup, the championship of the WHL, in 1973 and 1974 and the entire league disbanded. From the beginning of the 1974/75 season until the end of the 1976/77 season , the Roadrunners played in the WHA, but could not celebrate any notable successes and disbanded completely after the last season.
It was not until 1989 that the Roadrunners were brought back to life and played in the International Hockey League until 1997 and in the West Coast Hockey League from 1997 to 2001 , before they were dissolved again. Meanwhile, in 1995 with the Phoenix Coyotes , a franchise of the National Hockey League arrived in the state, which previously served as Winnipeg Jets was located in Canada.
Resettlement of the RoadRunners in Phoenix
For the 2005/06 season of the ECHL, a team called RoadRunners was relocated to Phoenix. Robert Sarver , the owner of the Phoenix Suns from the National Basketball Association , and Claude Lemieux , a former NHL player, came into action as initiators . After a weak opening season with a lot of bad luck with injuries, in which only 20 wins in a total of 72 games, the team qualified for the playoffs for the first time in the 2006/07 season, but were eliminated in the first round against the Las Vegas Wranglers in four games. Early in the season it was a commitment as a farm team of the Phoenix Coyotes received, which was not renewed at the end of the season.
Before the start of the 2007/08 season they went with the San Jose Sharks from the National Hockey League a new a farm team engagement. This also included a collaboration with the Worcester Sharks from the American Hockey League .
